Ultimate Comparison Guide

Choosing the best convertible car seat for your baby can be a daunting task but Tot On Board has made this task easier for you. Here, on this page, you will find our convertible car seat comparison chart where you can compare convertible car seats side-by-side and see the latest convertible car seat models along with their important features.

Before using our car seat comparison guide please take just a moment to read this first. Here is what each column means:

Brand Name — Shop from the best brands in the business including Britax, Chicco, Diono, Graco, Maxi-Cosi, Peg Perego, Recaro, Safety 1st and several others.

Model Name — We have compiled a list of the latest models including many of the newest 2015 models. Buying the latest models is always best because you get the most advanced and improved features from each manufacturer.

RF MIN WT — RF MIN WT means the rear-facing minimum weight. This column is important if you have a newborn. Most convertible car seats have a 5 lb. minimum weight requirement meaning that your baby must weigh at least 5 lb. in order to ride safely in that car seat. However, some convertible car seats have a higher minimum.

RF MAX WT — RF MAX WT means the rear-facing maximum weight. This is a really important column. Riding in a rear-facing position (which means your child rides facing the rear of your vehicle) is always the safest position for your child. Look for a big number in this column because you want your child to ride rear-facing for as long as they possibly can. (It should also be noted that in addition to a rear-facing maximum weight each car seat also has a rear-facing maximum height. We do not include the rear-facing maximum height in our chart because many times the maximum height for rear-facing is not expressed by a specific number of inches for your child’s height. Rather it may be stated as, for example, as “the top of the head must be at least one inch below the top of the shell” or other similar type of language. For the rear-facing maximum height you will need to consult your owner’s manual. It is also important to realize that is some instances your child may grow too tall to ride in the rear-facing position because they have exceeded the maximum height even though they have not yet reached the maximum weight. In those instances you child will have to immediately begin riding forward-facing).

FF MAX WT — FF MAX WT means forward-facing maximum weight. Because these are convertible car seats once your child outgrows the rear-facing position your child will need to ride in the forward-facing position. This column shows the maximum weight allowed to ride forward-facing. Once they exceed this weight you will need to find another car seat or, if your child is ready, they could possibly begin using an adult seat belt.

FF MAX HT — FF MAX HT means forward-facing maximum height. This column shows the maximum height allowed to ride forward-facing in inches. Once your child exceeds this height he or she will need to have another car seat or, if they are ready, they could possibly transfer to an adult seat belt.

BOOSTER SEAT — Some convertible car seats can be converted to a booster once your child has outgrown the regular forward-facing maximum size seat, thus allowing your child to get even more potential use out of the seat. If the seat has booster seat capabilities you will see both the maximum weight and height that the booster seat can accodomate. If the seat does not have booster seat capabilities you will see the word “No” in this column.

SEAT WIDTH — If you have a small car, or if you are planning to ride three across, you will need to consider the seat width. Even a one inch difference in seat width can potentially make a big difference.

SEAT WEIGHT — Seat weight is probably not an important consideration for most people because typically most users tend to leave their car seats in their cars for long periods of time and will not need to carry them around that much. However, if you do plan to carry your car seat around frequently you should consider the weight of the seat and go for a lighter weight seat.

PRODUCT WARRANTY — Typically most car seats come with a one-year limited warranty. Others may come with a 90 day limited warranty.

PRODUCT LIFE — Did you know that every car seat manufactured today has an expiration date just like the food in your refrigerator? It’s true. Every manufacturer must set an expiration date for each car seat they make. Once this date is reached you can no longer use this car seat and you will have to throw it away. This is not some type of manufacturer’s sales gimmick. This is real, and your child’s safety is at stake. You see, car seat parts and materials will degrade over time. This is true even if the car seat has never been used. The product life column shows the maximum amount of potential use for each car seat. For instance, if this column says “7 Years” then 7 years would be the maximum amount of use you could get. However you will not really ever get a full 7 years. That is because the 7 years starts the day the car seat is manufactured and not on the day you buy it. (You will find the actual date of manufacture somewhere on the car seat itself). So, for example, if the expiration date is set for 7 years but the particular one you buy has been sitting on a warehouse shelf somewhere for the past 6 months you would potentially get 6-and-a-half-years of use.

PRICE RANGE — The price range column shows the suggested manufacturer’s retail price for the product. For your convenience, we have separated the products into four price ranges as follows:

$$$$: Price above $300 | $$$: Price between $200 to $300 | $$: Price between $100 to $200 | $: Price under $100

CURRENT PRICE — The last column links to the current price of the product. Always check the current price. You may get a significant discount!
